mental health 'trap' most people get wrong
Last week I had one of those days…
Felt like the thread of time had stopped, there was no apparent reason to get out of bed, and all I felt was existential doubt.
“Is this what God had in mind?”
For me, such days are often confusing.
Not because I think I shouldn’t feel that way…
But, because just the day before I felt the exact opposite: filled with hope, gratitude, and enthusiasm!
How could my mental state shift so dramatically overnight?
Over my years coaching and doing therapy, this is a question I’ve thought of often. And seen my clients deal with it as well.
Here’s the answer I came up with:
It’s not about feeling good all the time.
That’s a cultural trap we’ve all been caught in at one point or another.
The idea that once we ‘figure it out,’ we’ll finally achieve some perfect, constant state of creativity, enthusiasm, and hope.
You see, mental health isn’t about reaching a destination where you feel good 100% of the time.
Its about building resilience.
The fact that we have ‘off days’ is a feature not a bug.
We wouldn’t learn to ride the waves without it.
The truth is emotions are fleeting, so you and I must learn how to navigate them with grace.
Focusing on building resilience helps in other practical ways as well…
Such as in dealing with:
The inevitable anxiety that modern life throws at you daily (fomo is everywhere)
The overwhelm that comes from making countless micro decisions day in, day out
The emotional roller coaster we must ride multiple times a day without knowing how to make it stop
While these are complex problems to solve - and they require personal nuance…
Here’s my simple suggestion:
Stop chasing happiness and start chasing resilience.
It’ll help you create a more sustainable habit and life of feeling hope, gratitude and a sense of calm… without feeling confused all the time (“why am I not happy all the time?!”).
Resilience is the real work.
And in my upcoming course - The 20-Minute Neural Reset - I share my unique approach to building a more resilient nervous system…
By “resetting” it from the inside out.
In just 20 minutes a week - I’ll show you how to release stress and pent-up emotions stuck deep inside your body.
So you can feel better overall (body and mind)...
Which means you can deal with these “off” days with much more grace and courage.
It’s based on my Somatic Psychology approach to healing.
A system that’s worked wonders for me and the clients I’ve shared it with (including some of the biggest creators on X and the internet).
I’m excited to share this with you soon!
While I put the final touches and polish the rough edges, if you’re interested in exploring this:
