what my ex had to say
a call I wasn’t expecting
6 months back I got this call out of the blue:
“Brian, how does working with Jeremy Renner sound?”
“WHAT?!”
It’s my (ex) agent.
I don’t know if you know this, but I used to be an actor back in my twenties. It was a pretty cool gig. I even got to work alongside Ed Helms for NBC, but I left it when I went back to grad school.
Anyhow, I haven’t spoken to this guy in years.
Apparently some writer saw me in an episode of TV and asked about me.
Though you can never tell - agents lie… and this seemed strange.
Long story super-short:
I didn’t get the gig.
(all good, what I’m building these days has me way more excited than my acting career ever did).
But it reminded me of something much more important:
How much I loved the craft of acting.
Craft.
I like that word.
It’s about working for the love of the work itself.
Finding a sense of fulfillment & purpose in the work you do.
Which is something I see a lot of people struggling with these days. The modern world is built like a minefield - and if you’re not careful?
BOOM.
You’re left stranded on the sidewalk, dazed and confused by:
The endless options in front of you
Everyone else (apparently) doing better than you
This sense of unease at not being able to fulfill your potential
More and more I see this online..
Especially since I grew my audience and started talking to people about this kind of stuff.
Finding purpose and fulfillment in your work is no joke.
It’s way more nuanced than anything I could ever share in an email.
But there’s a simple realization I’ve had after 7+ years of experience as a therapist or coach…
When you feel better mentally and physically?
You make better decisions.
You make bolder decisions.
Decisions that are good for your long-term fulfillment. Your sense of purpose. May I even say, your soul?
More importantly, when you feel better, you follow through on your decisions.
Which is what brings about sustainable change.
Now as I’ve hinted at before…
I’m building something I believe can help you get rid of this fog of confusion, anxiety and stress that’s clouding your judgment.
It’s something brand new (since I haven’t seen anyone teach it the way I do).
And it’s based on my “body centric” approach to better mental health using Somatic Psychology.
I’ll share more details on this soon, but in the meantime I’d love to know:
What's your current biggest struggle when it comes to better mental health?
