3 ways to ruin your mental health (with these 'good' habits)
Here’s something wild:
The top 3, most common habits for “better” mental health…
Self-Help
Mindfulness
Positivity Culture
… that most people swear by?
Are amongst the worst things you can do to relieve stress, anxiety or overwhelm.
And if you think I’m just making this up to get you to read this email…
Hear me out for a second and decide for yourself.
These approaches might help you feel better for a moment, sure… but there’s a catch.
They’re vulnerable to a little-known phenomenon called “Cognitive Bypassing”.
I’ll telll exactly what that is, but first it’s crucial to understand how ^those mental health habits work.
In essence:
Instead of healing your pain, they make you better at avoiding it.
Take mindfulness for instance.
You observe your thoughts… which is great…
But simply being mindful doesn’t tell you how or where to DIRECT those nagging, anxious and never-ending thoughts - so real work can begin.
Next, self-help:
A large part of which can be boiled down to “reframing” your negative thoughts.
Which is again useful…
But what about all that pain and stress that’s now left unresolved?
Where did that go?
(I’ll tell you exactly where before this email is done.)
Lastly:
Toxic positivity.
Don’t get me wrong here… being grateful is great! No two ways about it.
But there’s a difference between being “grateful” and being delusional. Trying to focus ONLY on the “bright side” can lead to some weird consequences…
Because for starters you’re blatantly ignoring the hurt that’s still there.
Inside you.
Now that we’ve broadly chatted about why the common practices don’t work…
Let me introduce you to the nasty work of Cognitive Bypassing.
It’s the tendency of the human brain to rely on rational thinking and intellectual explanations… to avoid facing the root cause of the pain.
Put simply:
People (subconsciously) fool themselves into thinking they’re “fine”, when they’re not.
Because ignoring your emotions doesn’t make them disappear.
They have to go somewhere, so where do they go?
Your body.
Recent studies show there’s a link between suppressing emotions and diabetes, inflammation, and heart disease.
Yikes.
Which is something I’ve been talking about in this email (and on my social media accounts) for a while now...
Your body holds the key.
Mental health isn’t just “mental”.
It’s also physical.
They’re both interlinked.
So, what can you do?
The simplest place to start is to allow your body to do what it is naturally capable of.
Feel those troublesome emotions.
Then “release” them.
Like emptying a heavy backpack you’ve been lugging around for years… you’ll start feeling lighter.
Sooner than you expect.
To be honest, this isn’t some “new age” pseudo science BS either...
This is how humans have naturally self-regulated for years.
Heck this is how animals self-regulate their stress out in the wild - while facing life and death situations daily - without relying on modern “mind tricks”.
(Ever seen a deer having a panic attack?)
Now I’m not calling you a deer. Obviously!
But I’m talking about the system that allows the body to regulate and release stress from deep within… on it’s own. Because it already knows how to.
Which is exactly what I’m gonna show you inside my new program, The 20-Minute Neural Reset.
When it launches on Tuesday, October 15.
This is the system that helped ME break free from my vicious cycle of self-sabotage.
And has over the past 7 years helped 100s of my clients break free as well.
I’m so excited to share this with you!
Thank you for being part of this journey with me. I truly appreciate your time and trust.
Stay tuned, and take care :)
With gratitude,
Brian
PS: I’ll be sending a few more emails before Tuesday when the course goes live.
There are only a few more days left to hop on that waitlist if you want to grab the launch-only discount for The 20-Minute Neural Reset.
